Greek Dried Figs Kumilio · Kimi, Evia Producer Story

Greek Dried Figs

Not all figs are equal

Not all dried figs are the same and Greek dried figs from Kimi prove exactly why. Most dried figs sold in supermarkets are mass processed, drier than they should be, and stripped of the natural flavour that makes a fig worth eating. Kimi figs are different.

Hand-processed and vacuum sealed to preserve every note of their honeyed, jammy depth, they bring something genuinely special to your table. Furthermore, behind every pack is Kumilio — a small family producer founded by the Lambrou family in the coastal town of Kimi on the island of Evia. Their approach is simple: grow exceptional figs, process them with care, and package them so they arrive tasting exactly as they should.

In this post, we'll explore what sets Kimi figs apart, where they come from, and how to get the most from them in your kitchen.

Provenance

From the fig heartland of Evia, Greece

Kimi — also known as Kymi is a small coastal town on the island of Evia (Euboea), the second largest island of Greece. The region has cultivated figs for centuries. Its warm, dry summers and coastal microclimate create conditions that develop natural sweetness and texture impossible to replicate at commercial scale.

Kimi figs carry a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) classification — only figs grown in this specific region can carry the name. The soil and microclimate of Kimi produce a fig that genuinely cannot be grown anywhere else, and the PDO status protects exactly that.

Kimi, Evia — PDO Region · Kumilio Producer

Costas Lambrou an architect by training — grew up surrounded by the fig trees of his hometown. He founded Kumilio in 2015 to bring that tradition to the world. The Lambrou family cultivate approximately 900 fig trees in the village of Kadi outside Kimi. Their products, including the award-winning retseli, have won multiple Great Taste Awards. Additionally, Kumilio's commitment extends well beyond the dried fig. They produce fig marmalades, spoon sweets, fig bars and the award-winning retseli sundried figs with Arcadian walnuts in fig syrup, sugar-free and rooted in an ancient recipe from Asia Minor. Every product begins and ends with the same ingredient: the Kimi fig.

What Sets Them Apart

Three reasons Kimi figs are different

01

Noticeably Softer

The Kimi variety has a distinctively fine skin. Combined with harvesting at peak ripeness, this means the fruit retains natural moisture through the drying process. Most commercial dried figs are hard and leathery. A Kimi fig gives gently when pressed — jammy inside rather than tough and chewy. Softness is a reliable indicator of careful, quality processing.

02

Hand-Processed

Mainstream dried figs are machine-sorted and machine-packed. Kimi figs are handled by hand at every stage of sorting and preparation. Each fig is individually assessed imperfect ones are removed, not passed through a conveyor. Furthermore, this reflects the philosophy at Kumilio: great food comes from producers who take the time to do things properly, even when a faster method exists.

03

Vacuum Sealed

Exposure to air causes dried figs to toughen, lose sweetness and go stale. Vacuum sealing removes that risk entirely. As a result, Kimi figs arrive in your kitchen tasting exactly as they should — moist, honeyed and full of flavour. The seal also protects quality across the entire journey from Evia to your table, which matters when the fruit has travelled from the other side of the world.
